Five’s a Family
If two’s company and three’s a crowd, what do you call five women? If you’re Chianti Booth you call it “family.”
Chianti lives with her four daughters across the Bay Bridge in Pass Christian, Mississippi. Even though life is hard, as a family they’re “tight.” The rent for Chianti’s three bedroom, two bath house (which she shares with her brother) is $1,100 per month. In the summertime, their electric bill can be as much as $450.
“To make ends meet, I was working two jobs,” she explains. “But I had to give up one of the jobs when my youngest daughter got sick.” |

Chianti currently works at St. Augustine Seminary in Bay St. Louis, providing cleaning services. Her eldest daughter keeps the house running by helping with cooking, cleaning, and other household chores. “The biggest challenge is clothes,” says Chianti. “You can imagine with four sisters, each with their own ideas about fashion and such. I can’t hardly keep them in clothes!” she jokes.
In spite of the challenges, Chianti says they’re one big, happy family. One thing they enjoy doing together is attending her eldest daughter’s high school volleyball games. “We’re volleyball fanatics,” she says. “We even watch it when it comes on television.”
In addition to providing some much needed relief from her monthly expenses, a Habitat house provides a stable foundation on which Chianti can build a future for her daughters. “I’ll finally be able to provide more than just the very basic things for my daughters,” she says. Their new house is also conveniently located a few blocks from the seminary in Bay St. Louis, making for a brief work commute.
Even though she’s already completed her sweat equity hours, Chianti is determined to help out on the jobsite the entire week of the blitz build. “I’m excited about this new house. I can’t wait for the volunteers to come and help build my house. Hurry up!” she happily exclaims. |
