A house built by Habitat for Humanity Bay-Waveland Area was awarded "2011 Green Affordable Project of the Year," by the National Association of Home Builders. Built in 2010, the house received Emerald certification through the National Association of Home Builders Research Center. This is the Research Center's highest level of certification. The house was the first to achieve this certification in the state of Mississippi. |

| The award was presented at a ceremony Monday night during the 2011 National Green Building Conference and Expo in Salt Lake City, Utah. The ceremony recognized builders from around the nation for their excellence in green building and advocacy during the previous year.
“These awards recognize and celebrate the most forward-thinking builders and remodelers in green building,” said Bob Jones, immediate past chairman of NAHB and a builder from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. “These award winners are pushing the envelope of what we can achieve with energy and resource efficiency.” |

Mark Scott, Director of Construction for Bay-Waveland Habitat received the award on behalf of the organization. “While it’s a privilege to help rebuild a community that was devastated by hurricane Katrina,” Mr. Scott remarked to attendees, “it’s especially fulfilling to rebuild this community with homes that are attractive, energy-efficient, durable, environmentally responsible and affordable.”
The Habitat house also placed second in Mississippi Home Corporation's Growing a Greener Mississippi Competition in 2010.
In 2009 Bay-Waveland Habitat made a commitment to build all its new houses to the green certification standards of the National Association of Home Builders Research Center and the U.S. Green Building Council. To date, HFHBW has 57 houses that are either certified or in the process of being certified. |

Most of Bay-Waveland Habitat’s new homes have received gold-level certifications.
The home achieved its certification through environmentally responsible practices such as advanced framing and waste management planning, and the use of materials such as Bluwood, Galvalume roofing, open-cell spray foam insulation, fly ash concrete, lowE paints and adhesives and Energy Star appliances.
“While building our houses to meet green certification standards is the right thing to do for our environment, it also has a direct impact on our homeowners,” commented Wendy McDonald, Executive Director of Bay-Waveland Habitat. “The energy efficiency of these homes means they will have much lower electricity and water bills each month. And that makes their homes more affordable.”
